Apple News | A Profile of Steve Jobs Published By The Times

The Times has published a profile Steve Jobs which discusses some of the recent events in his life; such as, his health and his fight to tear down the Jackling House.

For five years the owner of the Jackling House in Woodside, California, has been trying to knock it down. He hates the place, calling it “one of the biggest abominations of a house I’ve ever seen”. He hates it so much, he has abandoned it to live a few miles away in Palo Alto. Pictures of the interior show a ghostly, decaying mansion. The owner can’t knock it down because of protests from conservationists. But a deal has been done. He will spend $600,000 to have it taken down and will have it rebuilt elsewhere — not a big victory by his standards, but a satisfying one. He has been having a hard time lately.

9to5Mac has heard that Apple’s PR people attempted to prevent publication of this report though most of the information in the report is common knowledge. Perhaps they felt a quick glance at the article might put Jobs in a negative light.

The report does recognize the genius of Steve Jobs:

Geniuses tend to see their own lives as universally significant, embodying the great currents of their age. They may not know they are doing this, but it is evident in their work. Everything about Jobs tells me this is how he sees his life, as the distillation of the high-tech revolution and of affluent, aspirational consumerism. He is, as Dan Lyons says, “the ultimate end-user”, both consumer and maker. He is one with the bozos and their gizmos. That’s who he is.

Apple News | i.TV 2.0 Available Soon With Tivo Remote

i.TV today announced the i.TV Remote Control Framework that gives third parties the ability to develop solutions to control external devices such as a television, an AV receiver or DVR via i.TV on the iPhone and iPod touch. The Tivo remote is the first integrated remote control on i.TV for TiVo subscribers with a broadband-connected TiVo DVR.

"With i.TV, you can now use your iPhone or iPod touch as a remote control for
televisions, DVRs and other home entertainment devices,” said i.TV CEO, Brad Pelo. "By bringing together the television guide and remote control on a mobile device you carry in your pocket, i.TV will change how people discover and watch television shows and movies.!We are pleased that TiVo is the first of our partners to introduce remote control capabilities for their customers who use i.TV.”

“TiVo is about giving the user control of the television experience,” said Jim Denney vice president of product marketing at TiVo Inc. “Having the TiVo remote available through i.TV is another way TiVo customers can access the content they want, the way they want.”

The i.TV Remote Control Framework gives development partners a flexible platform upon which to re-imagine the traditional remote control. For example, developers can make alphanumeric keypads for channel number entry optional and instead present users with a graphical user interface where they can tap on images or links to change channels on a television.

Remote controls built upon the framework use scripts that define user interface elements and key press behavior for controlling external home entertainment devices. Device discovery and communication between the iPhone or iPod touch and external hardware are handled via the Bonjour protocol or Apple"s External Accessory Framework for Bluetooth accessories.

Also new in i.TV 2.0
• New user interface -- Streamlined and simplified UI and user experience, based on feedback and usage data from millions of i.TV users.
• iTunes integration -- From show detail screens, discover and instantly download download relevant television episodes, movies, and podcast content from iTunes.
• Alerts - Using the iPhone OS push notification capabilities, i.TV now allows users to set alerts for specific, upcoming shows or simply ask for an alert anytime a new episode will air.

Pricing and Availability
i.TV 2.0 with integrated TiVo remote control, iTunes integration and new user interface is free and will be available in August from the iTunes Store.

iPhone App Facebook 3.0 is Submitted to App Store

Facebook submitted Facebook version 3.0 of iPhone app to Apple. Joe Hewitt told this via Twitter:
“Just uploaded Facebook for iPhone 3.0 to the App Store for review.”

Joe also said that he’ll post the screen shots and details of Facebook 3.0 app soon on this Facebook link. Furthermore he said that they are going to start work on Facebook version 3.1 of iPhone application from tomorrow.
In July we have been published the detailed features list of Facebook 3.0 iPhone application. There are so many enhancements are included in this version of Facebook iPhone app and the most interesting one is video uploads through iPhone 3GS.
So, let’s wait for Apple response, obviously company will take a little time for the approval of this iPhone app.

TomTom's much-anticipated iPhone GPS

iPhoneclub.nl reports [Google translation] that four regional versions of TomTom's much-anticipated iPhone GPS application have appeared in Apple's New Zealand App Store: U.S. & Canada, Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Pricing is as follows (Users should set their iTunes Store to "New Zealand" prior to clicking the App Store links.):

- U.S. & Canada [App Store]: NZ $124.99 (US $84.41)
- Western Europe [App Store]: NZ $179.99 (US $121.55)
- Australia [App Store]: NZ $104.99 (US $70.90)
- New Zealand [App Store]: NZ $119.99 (US $81.03)

The App Store application prices obviously include only the iPhone application and not the companion car kit that will integrate a car mount, enhanced GPS receiver, built-in speaker, and power cables. The kit will also include an audio output jack, as well as a microphone to enable use of the iPhone as a Bluetooth speakerphone. A package supposedly containing both the hardware and software components appeared for pre-order early last month priced at £99 (US $163.39) plus taxes at UK retailer Handtec, although the legitimacy of the offer remains unclear.

It is unknown whether the applications' appearance on the New Zealand App Store is the first phase of a rollout to multiple countries or if the release was a premature addition.
