Apple Announces October 22 Event: “We Still Have a Lot to Cover”

Apple has officially announced that it will be holding a special event on October 22nd where the company is expected to unveil the new iPad 5 and iPad mini 2.from tomorrow’s big reveal at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center at 10am PDT / 1pm EDT so all eyes are on Apple’s next-generation iPads.

the latest updates to the company’s iPad line, but the new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks will likely get some stage time, as well.
The next version of the iPad, Apple’s fifth, is expected to feature a thinner, lighter design akin to the iPad mini’s, and an improved camera. It will run Apple’s new 64-bit A7 chip, sources said. The second-generation iPad mini will be upgraded with a Retina display, and will also likely see the A7 incorporated into its innards.

“Watch the special event held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco, CA,” the event listing reads.
Additionally, the company will be live-streaming the show to iOS devices and Macs through the new October 2013 event section on its Apple Events web page
According to Apple, live streaming video requires Safari 4 or later on OS X v10.6 or later or Safari on iOS 4.2 or later. Streaming via Apple TV is supported on the second or third-generation Apple TV with software 5.0.2 or later.

Apple typically live-streams major events, but not as a rule of thumb.
Last month’s double iPhone announcement, for example, wasn’t live-streamed so fans had to wait for the video replay to go live a few hours after the event had wrapped up.

Today’s event kicks off at 10am PST / 11am MST / 12pm CT / 1pm EST.
Here are keynote times for our international readers:
• London – 6:00 p.m.
• Paris – 7:00 p.m.
• Berlin – 7:00 p.m.
• Tokyo – 2:00 a.m. (Wednesday)
• Sydney – 4:00 a.m. (Wednesday)
• Auckland – 6:00 a.m. (Wednesday)

Apple to Release iOS 4.3.2 in the Next Two Weeks?

Apple is reportedly preparing iOS 4.3.2 for release within the next two weeks, according to BGR.

Weve just been told by one of our Apple ninjas that the company is working on another iOS 4.3.x release: iOS 4.3.2. Its said to include a few enhancements, address security issues, and it will also fix several bugs that have affected users. Were told to expect the software update for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad in about two weeks.

Before you buy that iPad 2 3G… (LTE Mifi)

We’ve just heard that a Verizon 4G LTE Mifi just went through the FCC. It isn’t going to give you GPS (And won’t be cheap) but it might be another option for your extra-Wifi Connectivity needs. Usually devices take around a month to get from FCC to store shelves.

Just thought you’d like to know.

apple tv, Dev, iphone 4, iphone dev team, Jailbreak, tool

Yesterday posixninja a member of the Chronic dev team announced that their jailbreak tool GreenPois0n would be released on Oct. 10th. With that simple ETA given the twittosphere blew up with questions yet to be answered.

Listed below are the answers to all your questions regarding unlocking, jailbreaking, device compatability with the new Greenpois0n jailbreaking tool:

Q: Will this jailbreak all i-devices?
A: No it will not, Greenpois0n will only jalbreak the latest generation of i-devices (ipod touch 4, iphone 4, ipad, Apple Tv)
Q: Will this unlock the iphone 4?
A: No this is only a jailbreak, you must stay on firmware 4.0.1 if you want to retain your unlock and wait until the iphone dev team releases pwnagetool to update and preserve your baseband or until a different way to unlock comes.
Q: Is this a tethered jailbreak or untethered?
A: With the help oc comex and another userland exploit it will be an untethered jalbreak only after doing a little extra work.
Q:Will this hacktivate my i-device (get it past the connect to itunes screen)?
A: Yes it supports hactivation meaning you don’t need an official sim card to activate the i-device.
Q:What about us older i-device owners why don’t we have a jailbreak (ipod touch 3g, iphone 3gs new bootrom)?
A: Unfortunately the SHAtter exploit the Greenpois0n jailbreak uses only works on newer i-devices as the exploit is based on the new A4 chip. Those with an older i-device are going to have to wait and see if the upcoming dev team jailbreak tools work with your device.

[iNews] SHAtter Exploit will Jailbreak All Existing iOS Devices Forever !

We previously broke the news to our respected readers of a low-level bootrom exploit which would enable jailbreaking on iOS 4.1 and beyond with all versions of the iPod touch, iPhone and of course, iPad! This exploit was special in a way because Apple will not be able to patch the exploit with a software update, instead it will require Apple to release entirely revised hardware for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and we all know that we are at least 6 months away from any hardware revisions.

Word around the Twittersphere is that the exploit named SHAtter is in the bootrom section, together with Pwnage 2.0 and 24kpwn which will make all existing devices, including the new iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G pwned for life! It is obviously not publicly available yet, both the Chronic Dev Team and the iPhone Dev Team hackers are hard at work right now trying to get everything ready for full release. Unfortunately though, this jailbreak is reportedly said to be tethered i.e. you will be required to connect your iOS device to your computer on every reboot unlike how untethered userland jailbreak like JailbreakMe worked. iPhone hacker posixninja has confirmed that Geohot also had this exploit dubbed at that time as “pwned4life” before leaving the jailbreak scene.

We will of course let you know whenever these new jailbreak and unlock tools for iOS 4.1 are available for download. Stay tuned!

Apple Unveils New iPod Shuffle With Buttons and VoiceOver

Apple today announced the new redesigned iPod shuffle which features both clickable “ring” buttons and VoiceOver technology, enabling users to easily navigate their music and playlists without ever looking at their iPod shuffle. The new wearable iPod shuffle has an all-aluminum enclosure with a built-in clip and comes in five brilliant colors—silver, blue, green, orange and pink. With nearly 50 percent more battery life, the new iPod shuffle features over 15 hours of music playback on a single battery charge and offers 2GB of storage for just $49.

“We’re making the iPod shuffle even better by combining clickable buttons and VoiceOver technology, so users can find and enjoy their music without ever looking at their iPod shuffle,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With its all-aluminum enclosure and built-in clip the new iPod shuffle is a great workout companion, and at just $49 it's a great entry-level iPod that almost everyone can afford.”

iPod shuffle is based on Apple’s incredibly popular shuffle feature, which randomly selects songs from a user’s music library. The clickable buttons make the new iPod shuffle even easier to use. Press the center button to play and pause, press the outer buttons to skip forward and back or adjust the volume up and down.

The new VoiceOver button on top of iPod shuffle allows users to hear the name of the currently playing song and to switch between songs, playlists or Genius Mixes. VoiceOver speaks 25 different languages and even alerts users when their battery needs charging.

The new iPod shuffle now supports Genius Mixes, the popular iTunes feature that automatically creates mixes from songs in a user’s music library that go great together. Genius Mixes provide the perfect way to rediscover music users already have, but may not have listened to recently.

iPod is the world’s most popular family of digital music players with over a quarter billion sold. Apple’s new holiday lineup includes a brand new iPod shuffle for just $49; the remarkable new iPod nano with Multi-Touch starting at $149; the incredible new iPod touch with Retina display, Apple’s A4 chip, FaceTime, HD video recording and Game Center starting at just $229; and iPod classic in a 160GB model for $249.

Pricing & Availability
The fourth generation iPod shuffle will be available next week for a suggested price of $49 (US) for a 2GB model in silver, blue, green, orange and pink through the Apple Store (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers.

Dev Team Jailbreaks iPhone OS 4 In Just 19 Hours

That has to be one of the fastest jailbreak ever! Just about 19 hours after Apple gave us a sneak peek at the future of iPhone OS and made the beta available to developers, the Dev Team managed to jailbreak iPhone OS 4.

MuscleNerd just tweeted the following along with a video of a jailbroken iPhone running OS 4 and Veency, a VNC app for jailbroken iPhones.

Something you’ll only find on JB 4.0: VNC http://is.gd/blzeg (BTW don’t bother with betas, they’re *very* buggy!)

There is no realease date and I don’t think this jailbreak will even be made available until the official release of iPhone OS 4. Still, I’m getting all excited just thinking about it.

WARNING Vroom is fake

Today some developer released a “pay” package called “Vroom” which sounded too good to be true. Unfortunately, it is. Do not install this package. Not only does it not do what it claims, but it is also somewhat dangerous and will wear out your iPhone with limited use. Read below for details. (Note: Zodttd has removed this package from Cydia, but it may creep up somewhere else).

First, this package claims to speed up your iphone, increase your free memory by managing your daemons, and increase your battery usage. Sounds amazing right? Who wouldnt want this?

So what does it really do? It enables memory swap on your device.

What are the results of memory swap on your device? The free memory will appear to be better. That’s because it is using your disk as memory. But that’s not all. This package is actually just a stolen file that is already on your device, renamed. So that means the “developer” decided to take a file off his iPhone, rename it, and sell it to you for $1.99.

Here is proof that the file is stolen. The original file is dynamic_pager that is provided by Apple in your /sbin folder. The new file from this app is called Vroom_data. Check out the md5sum of both proving that the files are identical:

BigBoss-iPhone:~ root# md5sum /sbin/dynamic_pager
e57afa9289e98fbd336eff14b996370a /sbin/dynamic_pager
BigBoss-iPhone:~ root# md5sum /sbin/Vroom_data
e57afa9289e98fbd336eff14b996370a /sbin/Vroom_data

Ok so the package is fraud.

But if you already have dynamic_pager, whats the harm in enabling it? The reason you don’t want memory swap enabled on your iPhone is this:

1) Memory swap will create a disk file on your flash disk. The CPU will need to spend I/O cycles reading and writing to this disk file. The I/O cycles will cost you battery because it takes battery power to do disk writes.

2) Flash disk has limited life span. They say some 100,000 writes per sector then it is dead. Having a swap file running will be quickly writing to the same sectors wearing out your flash disk.

3) Writing to a page file takes some CPU cycles.

Now, lets examine the developer’s claims and compare them to what the package actually does:

Claim #1: Increases memory. Sort of. It creates a disk swap. Result is iphone will appear to have more memory. Some apps may crash less. This isn’t all bad. (I think I will release a free package that enables disk swap with a strong warning on it for those that want this).

Claim #2: Manages your daemons. FALSE / lies. It is the apple dynamic_pager file. It does only that. It does not manage your daemons.

Claim #3: It speeds up your device: FALSE. In fact, disk swap actually slows down the device because there are extra disk write used in order to access memory.

Claim #4: It provides better battery performance: FALSE. In fact it actually causes your battery to drain faster because of the disk write I/O cycles and the extra CPU required.

Claim #5: It allows your iPhone to boot at 2% rather than 15% battery. FALSE. This is built into the device not the iPhone OS. (Just like DFU mode). You cannot make changes to this.

Claim #6: It allows your iPhone to run until there is 1% battery rather than 5% before it shuts off. FALSE. See #5 above.

Finally, the package in Cydia was packaged incorrectly. Daemon plist was owned by user 1000. Launchctl will not load any daemon not owned by root. This caused the daemon to not start. With that bug, the paging system is not even enabled resulting in no change in performance! (LOL again). Anyone claiming to install this and finding a boost in speed, battery, etc is experiencing the placebo effect.

This all reminds me of the scam last year with the fake app I dont crash. At least that guy wasn’t trying to charge you money.

Note: enabling memory swap also seems to break google maps app.
