Cydia Might Be Slow or Unresponsive, But It’s OK

If you’ve been trying to use Cydia for the last day, you might have noticed that it is slow, sluggish, or even unresponsive. Before you start thinking that your iPhone may be the cause of the problem, relax and don’t freak out, because it’s not. Since the release of the iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak yesterday, potentially hundreds of thousands of people have been jailbreaking, launching, and refreshing Cydia sources in the same short period of time, resulting in server overloads for many repos…
Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do. The only solution is to wait for things to calm down. I suspect that in a day or two, most jailbreakers will have already installed the untether, and things will start going back to normal.
So be patient! In the meantime, you may want to try using Cydia late at night when there is less online activity.

Untethered iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak Available Now

Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 untethered Jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 is out there and available for Windows and Mac users. The latest Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, original iPad, iPod touch 3G, and iPod touch 4G.

Dev team’s words:
“A few days ago, @pod2g gave the untether to both the iPhone devteam and the chronic devteam. We’ve put it into redsn0w 0.9.10 and PwnageTool, and the chronic devteam put it into a Cydia package (the same set of exploits is in all three).
Important Note:
  • The untether is for iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone3GS, iPhone4, iPhone4-CDMA, iPad1, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G
  • If you have one of those devices and are not on 5.0.1 yet, update now! The SHSH window is still open for 5.0.1 If you unlock via ultrasn0w or gevey, make sure you only get to 5.0.1 via a custom IPSW! Once you’re at 5.0.1, use the latest redsn0w 0.9.10 to both jailbreak and untether.
  • If you’re already at 5.0.1 with a tethered jailbreak, you have two choices: either run redsn0w 0.9.10 over your current jailbreak (deselect “Install Cydia” if you do that), or install the Cydia package prepared by the chronic devteam. The patches are the same regardless of which you choose.
  • Some of you are using a hybrid 5.0/5.0.1 configuration. If so, do not attempt to install this untether over that setup! You will most likely get into a reboot cycle. Do a sync and fresh restore to 5.0.1 then install the jailbreak + untether.”

Focused on A5

Focused on A5

I read the comments on the blog, and I know that a lot of people are waiting for the A5 jailbreak.

Also, I know there are tons of people out there with A4 or even earlier devices who wants the untether now and don't care about it could be interesting to wait A5 is finished to release or even 5.1, so that we don't waste an exploit that took me months to find and develop.

I need to focus on A5 and hope I can find a path quick, and I have the feeling that chronic-dev could help me.

So, here is what I did:
- I gave all the details to the chronic dev team so that they can finish, test, integrate and release the A4 jb ASAP.
- I'll put all my energy from now on on the A5

Hope I don't disappoint.

See you.

Saurik Helps Pod2g Makes More Progress on iPhone 4S Untethered Jailbreak

It looks like the caching issues that jailbreak guru pod2g was facing are now a thing of the past.

Just a while ago, the iPhone hacker updated his blog acknowledging that he had solved the the A5 chip cache issue, which means we are even closer to the reality of an untethered iPhone 4S jailbreak.

pod2g also touched on a few other points of interest regarding the much anticipated release…

From pod2g:

I discussed with @saurik today about the launchd boot process, and he’s found one missing piece of the puzzle I needed to have a perfectly stable jailbreak. He’s definitly one of the best iOS gurus out there. Thank you saurik!

So not only was the caching issue solved, but another one of the lingering issues hindering a stable untether was solved as well.

Folks, we’re getting the impression that an iPhone 4S untethered jailbreak is making its strides into the home stretch.

We’ll have more news as it breaks. In the meantime, why not share with us the first thing you’ll install on your jailbroken iPhone 4S?

iOS 5.1 Beta 2 Teases Bloggers With References To iPhone 10, iPad 8 & Apple TV 9 [Humor]

9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman has been peeling through the .plist files of the latest iOS 5.1 beta, and it appears that Apple is screwing with bloggers on purpose: weary of people dissecting the iOS files for mention of future iPhones and iPads, iOS 5.1 Beta 2 references the Apple TV 9, iPad 8, and iPhone 10, among others.

We’ve dedicated more than a few posts t0 declaring that a new iPad or iPhone is coming thanks to .plist references, but even so, I think this is pretty funny. Way to screw with a poor tech blogger’s head, Apple! The message is clear from here on out: you can’t trust iOS’s .plist files for a scoop. Well done!

New iOS 5.0.1 Build Was Released to Fix 'No SIM Card' Errors?

The new iOS 5.0.1 build released yesterday may have been seeded to fix 'No SIM Card' errors on the iPhone 4S, according to MacRumors.

Based on a new Apple support document, it now appears that the updated build may have been designed to address an issue some users have been experiencing with SIM card-related errors. With the update affecting a relatively small portion of users, Apple may have elected not to push it out to all users in the form of an iOS 5.0.2 software update, and instead rely on those users who are having problems following Apple's advice and obtaining the new build through the restore process outlined as a solution for the issue.

In the support document Apple says that in certain situations, iPhone 4S may have difficulty recognizing a micro-SIM card, resulting in the following behaviors:
● "Invalid SIM" or "No SIM Card installed" alert appears intermittently.
● Status bar displays "No Service" or "Searching" in a location with good network coverage.

To resolve the issue, users are advised to restore their devices through iTunes which would install the new build 9A406 of iOS 5.0.1.

There have also been early reports that the new build improves battery life for some users.
