Sprint to Offer Unlimited Data on iPhone 5

The Wall Street Journal had already told us that Sprint will have the iPhone 5 some weeks ago. Now Bloomberg has added on to this rumor, and said that Sprint will be offering an unlimited data plan on the iPhone 5 on their network in mid-October.

Rumors on the Sprint iPhone 5 keep spreading like crazy. Just last week some “source” tipped off This is my next, and said Best Buy will have an “Apple Fixture” on Friday, October 21 2011. This is how Best Buy did it during the iPhone 4 launch as well, so that “Apple Fixture” could mean that the Sprint iPhone 5 release date will be on that day.

Stay tuned and follow fan our Facebook page to stay up to date.

Apple Seeds OS X Lion 10.7.2 Build 11C48 and iCloud Beta 10 to Developers

Apple today pushed out new test builds of OS X 10.7.2 and iCloud for OS X developers, continuing to quickly move forward with testing of iCloud. As with the previous interval, the updates come exactly one week after the previous seeds.

Unlike last week's release, there is no new beta of iPhoto 9.2 in today's set of seeds. There also appear to be no new developer releases on the iOS side, with Apple having released the seventh beta of iOS 5 just two days ago.

We've yet to hear about any specific changes in the latest seeds, but Apple has been asking developer to target AirPort, AppKit, GraphicsDrivers, iCal, iChat, Mac App Store, Mail, Spotlight, and Time Machine with the last several builds of OS X 10.7.2.

Apple has announced that it will be launching iOS 5 and iCloud this fall, and the company has been rumored to be launching new iPhone hardware in early-to-mid October, with iOS 5 and iCloud should be going live right around that same time. Apple earlier this week began developer testing on iTunes Match, a paid service that stores all of a user's music in the cloud for access from any Internet-connected iOS device or computer.

Apple Is Scouting London’s Financial District

A proposed demolition and new 10-story office building in the financial district of London (UK) has attracted the attention of Apple’s retail team, who might want to lease the entire 13,000 square-feet of ground-floor retail space when the building is finished. A source told the Reuters news service that Apple has talked to the developer of 100 Cheapside about becoming a tenant in the building, which also has about 86,000 square-feet of upper-floor office space. The building is less than two miles from the existing Covent Garden store and would be the third in city center. However, the project is currently in limbo on two fronts—first, the land is owned by the city of London, which is still looking for a buyer after one bidder dropper out. Second, plans for the building are being challenged by 13 neighbors, who say they were not consulted about the proposed building’s height and bulk, and how it will block their sunlight. The neighbors’ challenge is part of a nationwide effort to set a legal precedent on whether neighbors to a proposed project have a right in law to sunlight, or whether planning officials can approve buildings that reduce sight-lines to the sun. Because of these uncertainties, it’s not clear when the building will be finished or when the store might open. You can view a list the application documents submitted by the developer to the city of London planning agency, or download (pdf) the individual building elevation, floor plan or project summary (which uses photos of Apple stores as an example retailer).

This rendering by the firm Michael Aukett Architects shows the final proposed design for the building, including the retail space on the ground floor with large windows.

Meet Comex, The 19-Year-Old iPhone Uber-Hacker Who Keeps Outsmarting Apple

Nicholas Allegra lives with his parents in Chappaqua, New York. The tall, shaggy-haired and bespectacled 19-year old has been on leave from Brown University since last winter, looking for an internship. And in the meantime, he’s been spending his days on a hobby that periodically sends shockwaves through the computer security world: seeking out cracks in the source code of Apple’s iPhone, a device with more software restrictions than practically any computer on the market, and exploiting them to utterly obliterate its defenses against hackers.

“It feels like editing an English paper,” Allegra says simply, his voice croaking as if he just woke up, though we’re speaking at 9:30 pm. “You just go through and look for errors. I don’t know why I seem to be so effective at it.”

To the public, Allegra has been known only by the hacker handle Comex, and keeps a low profile. (He agreed to speak after Forbes‘ poking around Twitter, Facebook and the Brown Directory revealed his name.) But in what’s becoming almost an annual summer tradition, the pseudonymous hacker has twice released a piece of code called JailBreakMe that allows millions of users to strip away in seconds the ultra-strict security measures Apple has placed on its iPhones and iPads, devices that account for more than half the company’s $100 billion in revenues.

The tool isn’t intended for theft or vandalism: It merely lets users install any application they want on their devices. But jailbreaking, as the practice is called, violates Apple’s obsessive control of its gadgets and demonstrates software holes that could be exploited later by less benevolent hackers.

Apple didn’t respond to requests for comment, but it’s not thrilled about Allegra’s work. When he released JailbreakMe 3 in July, the company rushed to patch the security opening in just nine days. Nonetheless, 1.4 million people used the tool to jailbreak their gadgets in that time, and more than 600,000 more since then. Allegra has become such a thorn in Apple’s side that its stores now block JailbreakMe.com on in-store wifi networks.

“I didn’t think anyone would be able to do what he’s done for years,” says Charlie Miller, a former network exploitation analyst for the National Security Agency who first hacked the iPhone in 2007. “Now it’s been done by some kid we had never even heard of. He’s totally blown me away.”

To appreciate JailbreakMe’s brilliance, consider how tightly Steve Jobs locks down his devices: Since 2008, Apple has implemented a safeguard called “code-signing” to prevent hackers from running any of their own commands on its mobile operating system. So even after an attacker finds a security bug that gives him access to the system, he can only exploit it by reusing commands that are already in Apple’s software, a process security researcher Dino Dai Zovi has compared to writing a ransom note out of magazine clippings.

After Allegra released JailbreakMe 2 last year, Apple upped its game another notch, randomizing the location of code in memory so that hackers can’t even locate commands to hijack them. That’s like requiring an attacker to assemble a note out of a random magazine he’s never read before, in the dark.

Update Remind Everyone

Update one more time Also, this is a good time to remind everyone (since we’re still seeing confusion about this): iPad2 owners with a baseband (3G or CDMA) cannot currently use saved blobs to go back to 4.3.3 once the signing window is closed. This is unlike every other device, so don’t be confused! iPad2 owners with basebands should stay away from all updates to maintain the jailbreak!
